SchoolsTESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages)Course : English for MissionsStart Date : Sunday, August 29, 2010 Contact : Nathan Fair ~ nfair2000@yahoo.com Base : YWAM GuadalajaraDescription : August 29-September 24, 2010 Our Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) course includes four weeks of intensive training in basic theories and methods of teaching English, intercultural communication for teachers, classroom management, how to work with different learning styles, testing, principles of language acquisition, as well as the sounds and grammar of English. An integral part of the training is the opportunity to practice teaching on campus during the course.
The TESOL curriculum includes: -Biblical principles for teaching -Linguistics -Second language acquisition -Syllabus and curriculum design -Teaching and integrating the four language skills -Teaching grammar -Teaching listening comprehension -Lesson plan helps -Classroom management -Program design and evaluation -Materials evaluation -Using the Bible in the ESL classroom -Culture shock -Good teacher characteristics
Upon completion of the course, students receive a TESOL certificate from University of the Nations as well as a transcript letter and a practicum assessment. These documents describe in detail the students’ specific skills and qualifications earned from the course. These will become the key for opening opportunities to teach English in many settings, worldwide.
The delivery mode for this course is a full-time intensive study program over a four-week period. The course includes 100 hours of lectures, approximately 40 hours of assignment preparation and 26 hours of realistic in-house training.
The lecture portion covers the following topics: linguistics; second language acquisition; theories and styles of learning; theories and methods of teaching speaking, reading, writing, listening, grammar and pronunciation; lesson planning; needs analysis, syllabus design and materials development; use of media; classroom management; testing; and program design and evaluation. Students are assessed through examination, classroom presentations, essays and written assignments. The texts for this portion of the course are Teaching English as a Foreign or Second Language, by Professor J. G. Gebhard, Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language by Professor Marianne Celce-Muria, Ph.D., Professor of TESOL and Applied Linguistics, and Institute for the Nations Theories and Methods Manual.
The course also includes a review of the English grammatical system, with special attention given to those aspects of English grammar which are especially difficult for language learners. Students are assessed through examination, microteaching of assigned grammar points, and grammar lessons taught during the practice teaching. The text for this section of the course is Oxford Practice Grammar, by John Eastwood.
The lecture portion of the course is complemented by classroom observation and professionally supervised practice teaching. Students are required to assess the needs and proficiency of the language learners, develop a syllabus appropriate for them, and prepare daily lesson plans accordingly.
Cost $695USD-Tuition and Books for first world participants. $500USD-Tuition and Books for 2nd and 3rd world participants. $300USD-Food and housing on the YWAM Guadalajara Campus, if desired. ($450 for couples)
